Stuck in your career? Let the Birdman show you the way
Talk and Q&A
Remark Events, Green Room, Farringdon
Tuesday 26 March, 6:30 - 8:30pm
Cost: £30
Who's this talk for?
Anyone who needs to give their work a new lease of life. You could be fresh out of uni with no clue what to do. You might be 28 and have realised the folly of a career in finance. Or you could be in your 40s like me, excited but also slightly terrified that you might have 25 years of work left.
What will you get out it?
A new way to think about your career. The encouragement to start thinking about your next leap. The chance to meet a group of likeminded people. I'll also tell you about some of the leaps I've made: from Hartlepool to Hollywood; from someone who'd do anything to get out of a presentation to stand up comedian.
Who's the Birdman?
For those who don't know, Birdman competitions take place in seaside towns up and down the country every summer. When I was growing up in Hartlepool it was my favourite day of the year. The basic idea is that a few brave souls construct a flying machine, throw on some fancy dress and fling themselves off the pier. The winner is the person who flies furthest. Sometimes it goes well. Other times not so much.
When it comes to work, the Birdman is exactly the flying metaphor we need for our turbulent times. It grounds us in reality. It gives us a new way to embrace and learn from failure. It keeps us humble. And obviously it's more fun.
Leap. Learn. Leap. Repeat. - The Birdman's Mantra
